NY GIANTS SECRET WEAPON ON DISPLAY
Giants Fans hope to Tempt Destiny for 3rd Super Bowl Victory
JANUARY 30, 2008, EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - For the first time in seventeen years, the NY Giants will once again have their winning billboard legacy in place when they play against the Patriots in the Big Game. With the help of Patriots and Giants fans at Massachusetts based Mammoth Media Inc. and New York based Clear Channel Outdoor, the 3rd Tempt Destiny billboard by Olympic artist Manuel Morales is now on display. Located in East Rutherford, New Jersey, off the NJ Turnpike by Exit 16 W (south of Paterson Plank Road), the "GIANTS Tempt Destiny!" billboard was won by Giants fans who cast over 176,000 votes online in support of their team at TemptDestiny.com.
Each time Manuel Morales, created a billboard in support of the NY Giants they later went on to win the Super Bowl (SB XXI & SB XXV) establishing a 2-for-2 winning track record which was documented and licensed by the NFL as the "NY Giants Super Bowl Commemorative Series" limited edition prints.
SECRET WEAPON
Beginning in 2000 at TemptDestiny.com, football fans competed to determine which team would be on the 3rd Tempt Destiny billboard. Each year the fans with the most votes earned the billboard rights in support of their team's bid for the "Big Game". And each year, the winning team failed to win their conference championship game which resulted in the Tempt Destiny billboard not being created... UNTIL NOW!
For the first time in the eight year history of the Tempt Destiny competition, the NY Giants fans showed up and won in force to rally from behind to beat the #1 place Packers fans! With the NY Giants NFC championship game victory, the first two steps needed to take place for the creation of the third Tempt Destiny billboard finally happened! Note: The artist did not do a billboard for the NY Giants SB XXXV bid due to the Giants fans failure to win the Tempt Destiny competition that year.
SO WHAT MAKES THIS BILLBOARD A TEMPT DESTINY BILLBOARD? - Superstition, Tradition, Fan Loyalty
EMPTY FOOTBALL - The football in the painting is outlined in brown and displayed that way, unfinished, on the billboard itself. Tradition has it that only after the NY Giants won the Super Bowl were the paintings completed by having the football painted silver to represent their successful Super Bowl victory. This tradition was inspired by, then coach, Bill Parcels' superstitious concerns and has been continued with the third billboard painting as well. When the team completes their goal of becoming the Super Bowl champs, that is when the painting is completed.
UNKNOWN PLAYER - As done twice before, the NY Giants painting for the third Tempt Destiny billboard will feature the tradition of a nondescript NY Giants player to represent the team as a whole, not a specific player.
MEDIUM - The 24" x 30" Manuel Morales paintings are on masonite board and painted using mixed style of combining poured lacquer paint, airbrush, and painting with oils.
FAN LOYALTY - From the beginning, the billboards were created as a gesture of support for the team feature on it buy those who sponsored the billboards. With the making of the third Tempt Destiny billboard, it is the first billboard in this series to be created by loyal fans voting for their team
SUPERSTITION 2-for-2 Winning Legacy (secret weapon) - The mystical winning track record associated with the two previous billboards is hoped to be carried on with a 3rd Super Bowl victory. Call it what you will - luck, superstition, happenstance, or coincidence - Manuel Morales prefers to call it destiny.
William Jennings Bryan (1860 ~ 1925) once said, "Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."
